The Neon Demon

Length: 118  minutes Genres: horror ~ thriller

Summary:

Jesse moves to Los Angeles just after her 16th birthday to launch a career as a model. The head of her agency tells the innocent teen that she has the qualities to become a top star. Jesse soon faces the wrath of ruthless vixens who despise her fresh-faced beauty. On top of that, she must contend with a seedy motel manager and a creepy photographer. As Jesse starts to take the fashion world by storm, her personality changes in ways that could help her against her cutthroat rivals.

Plot Twist?

The two models and mko artist are eating people and bathing in their blood

Metaphorically: Like the moon's cycle, Jesse's rise and fall is also a cycle of new beginnings. Jesse was a young, innocent girl who saw too much success too fast. She got carried away and developed a self-destructive personality. She felt that everyone wanted to be like her. This initially helped her to get gigs, but eventually rubbed off on everyone, even the people who liked her. Because of her arrogance, Jesse was ‘consumed’ by the industry. Blood usually symbolizes an open emotional wound in dreams. So, if you apply this to the bloodbath scene, you can say that it is a metaphor for her enemies who are celebrating the fact that they destroyed Jesse emotionally. In the Neon Demon, many men are portrayed as predators, but in the end, it is the women who prey on Jess. The moonlight scene, with Ruby, is a metaphor for the beginning of another cycle where there will be another new person who will grow or be eaten and spit out just like Jesse.

Ending:

Jessie becomes the food to all three, gigi can't stomach it and dies while Sarah goes back to finish off her shoot and continue on

Literal explanation: Ruby, Sarah, and Gigi are witches. They place an offer to Jesse, in the beginning, asking her if she was food or sex. Given Jesse was not going to join the coven by having ritualistic intercourse with Ruby, she automatically becomes food. They eat her and bathe in her blood to feed off her youthfulness. Ruby, evicts Jesse’s blood from inside her to complete the ritual.

Notes - Thoughts

Some scenes are really explained:

  • One the models drinking her blood

  • Seeing neon triangle through some scenarios

Unsettling scenes:

  • Hear motel manager next door either killing or r*p!ng thirteen yr old

  • Mko artist sexually assaulting  a corpse while imaging it’s jessie

Fashion show scene: The scene starts with blue lights, symbolizing Jesse’s soft side. Then, she sees an alternate fearless version of herself kissing her reflection, which symbolizes her falling in love with the bolder version of herself. Then, the scene switches to red lights, symbolizing her strong-willed side. This scene shows Jesse’s first big break and her narcissistic beginnings. She is a shy young girl, but now she is a confident young woman. The triangle symbolizes body, mind, and soul. The triangle could mean a lot of things. But in this context, it stands out. The triangle symbolizes progress and the achievement of dreams. In this scene, the triangle is upside down, which adds a layer of decadence.

Rating: Loved <3

Very cinematic, little dialouge throughout it all, long movie but very deep and captive. Really makes you think and has two different ways of looking at it. Deep physchological when really look into the depths behind it all
